Word Tetris
GAME #102
Words played
1 wordHow to Play Word Tetris
Type any word between 2 and 5 letters and hit Enter. Your word fills the bottom row of the grid and everything above it gets pushed up. Keep going until the grid fills up or you clear it out entirely.
When two or more of the same letter end up touching each other horizontally or vertically, they light up. Tap any highlighted tile to pop the whole cluster at once. The tiles above will fall down to fill the gaps.
The goal is to clear the entire grid. You win when there are no tiles left. If a new word would push tiles off the top of the grid, the game ends — so try to keep things tidy as you go.
The best strategy is to set up clusters before you remove them. Words with repeated letters like LLAMA or SPEED create instant matches. Stacking the same letter across multiple words builds up larger groups worth popping all at once.
Word Tetris uses the NWL 2023 wordlist, the same dictionary used in competitive Scrabble in North America. If a word is in there, it counts.
Tips & Strategies for Word Tetris
Repeated letters are your most powerful tool
The whole game revolves around building clusters of matching letters and then popping them. Words like LLAMA, SPEED, TEETH, IGLOO, and AFFIX drop two identical letters at once and give you an instant head start on a cluster. Keep a mental list of short words with double letters and you will clear the board far more efficiently than someone relying on random guessing.
Think about where tiles will land before you type
Unlike a normal word game the letters do not just disappear when accepted. They stack. Before submitting a word look at what is already on the board and think about whether the new letters will land somewhere helpful or somewhere that creates a mess you will have to deal with later. A word that clears a cluster is almost always better than a longer word that just piles on.
Pop clusters as soon as they form
It is tempting to try building a massive cluster before popping it for maximum effect but the risk is not worth it. A cluster of three or four matching letters you pop right away keeps the board tidy. Waiting for six or seven means more tiles stacking up in the meantime and a much higher chance the board fills before you are ready.
Keep the bottom rows clear
The game ends when tiles reach the top so your real goal is managing height. Prioritise words that will land on or near tiles that are already building up. A word that drops into a full column and immediately creates a cluster to pop is worth far more than a word that scores well in a traditional word game but leaves the board one step closer to filling up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What words are accepted in Word Tetris?
Any real word between 2 and 5 letters is accepted. The game uses the NWL 2023 word list, which is the same dictionary used in competitive North American Scrabble. If a word is in there, it counts. Do not be afraid to try short or obscure words — if they are valid they will go in.
What happens when matching letters touch?
When two or more of the same letter end up next to each other horizontally or vertically, they light up. Tap any highlighted tile to pop the entire cluster at once, and the tiles above drop down to fill the gaps. Building up large clusters before popping them is the most effective way to clear the board quickly.
How do I lose in Word Tetris?
If a new word would push tiles off the top of the grid, the game is over. Keeping the board tidy as you go matters just as much as finding good words, so it helps to think about where letters are going to land before you type. Words with repeated letters are especially useful because they create instant clusters you can pop right away.
