History of Word Search

Word Search puzzles have a surprisingly recent origin. The first modern word search is widely credited to Norman E. Gibat, who created one for the Selenby Digest, a small local publication in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1968. He designed it as a simple filler activity, never imagining it would become a global phenomenon.

The format spread quickly through educational publishers in the 1970s, who recognised its value as a learning tool for children. Teachers used it to reinforce spelling and vocabulary in a way that felt more like play than study. By the 1980s, dedicated word search books were selling millions of copies worldwide.

The digital age gave the genre a second life. Online and mobile versions brought word search to entirely new audiences, making it one of the most played casual games on the internet. What started as a newsletter filler has become a timeless classic enjoyed by people of all ages.
